چکیده

In this talk we consider the relationship between the conjectured uniqueness of the Moonshine module V of Frenkel, Lepowsky and Meurman and Monstrous Moonshine, the genus zero property for Thompson series discovered by Conway and Norton. We discuss some evidence to support the uniqueness of V by considering possible alternative orbifold constructions of V from a Leech lattice compactified string. Within these constructions we find a new relationship between the centralisers of the Monster group and the Conway group generalising an observation made by Conway and Norton. We also relate the uniqueness of V to Monstrous Moonshine and argue that given this uniqueness, then the genus zero properties hold if and only if orbifolding V with respect to a monster element reproduces V or the Leech theory. * Talk presented at the Nato Advanced Research Workshop on ‘Low dimensional topology and quantum field theory’, Cambridge, 6-13 Sept 1992. † EMAIL: [email protected]

On the Relationship between Monstrous Moonshine and the Uniqueness of the Moonshine Module

We consider the relationship between the conjectured uniqueness of the Moonshine Module, V♮, and Monstrous Moonshine, the genus zero property of the modular invariance group for each Monster group Thompson series. We first discuss a family of possible Zn meromorphic orbifold constructions of V♮ based on automorphisms of the Leech lattice compactified bosonic string. We reproduce the Thompson se...

We introduce the notion of vertex operator superalgebra with enhanced conformal structure, which is a refinement of the notion of vertex operator superalgebra. We exhibit several examples, including a particular one which is self-dual, and whose full symmetry group is a direct product of a cyclic group of order seven with the sporadic simple group of Rudvalis. We thus obtain an analogue of Mons...

Monstrous Moonshine of higher weight

We determine the space of 1-point correlation functions associated with the Moonshine module: they are precisely those modular forms of non-negative integral weight which are holomorphic in the upper half plane, have a pole of order at most 1 at infinity, and whose Fourier expansion has constant 0. There are Monsterequivariant analogues in which one naturally associates to each element g in the...

In Part I we introduced the notion of enhanced vertex operator superalgebra, and constructed an example which is self-dual, has rank 28, and whose full symmetry group is a seven-fold cover of the sporadic simple group of Rudvalis. In this article we construct a second enhanced vertex operator superalgebra whose full automorphism group is a cyclic cover of the Rudvalis group. This new example is...

On the Uniqueness of the Moonshine Vertex Operator Algebra

It is proved that the vertex operator algebra V is isomorphic to the moonshine VOA V ♮ of Frenkel-Lepowsky-Meurman if it satisfies conditions (a,b,c,d) or (a,b,c,d). These conditions are: (a) V is the only irreducible module for itself and V is C2-cofinite; (a) dimVn ≤ dimV ♮ n for n ≥ 3; (b) the central charge is 24; (c) V1 = 0; (d) V2 (under the first product on V ) is isomorphic to the Gries...
